’SON 1‘ IS THE FIRST of a SERIES OF interactive WORKS LOOKing AT a spectrum of CONTEMPORARY ISSUES.
The collection WIll be informed by INTELLIGENT REFLECTION,considered COMMENT AND a post-Brexit imperial quarter pound OF HUMOUR.
S.O.N. is an acronym for 'State of the Nation'. As a trained graphic designer I am fascinated by dials, switches and old machines. This is designed to be an interactive exhibit. It detects the viewers presence with a proximity sensor, and an 'amperes' dial feeds back a reading. When the user interacts with the machine it feeds back their 'in' or 'out' persuasion and makes a decision for them.
This exhibit reflects upon the unreliability of forecasting in political (and other) arenas and comments on some of the random, or uninformed decision-making that occurs on polling days.
Different versions of this machine could usefully be placed in polling stations to let undecided voters make a quick, randomized choice on the day of any seriously important vote. It could equally be placed in a proverbial closet.
